چکیده

We report the discovery of ULAS J131610.28+075553.0, a sdT6.5 dwarf in the UKIDSS Large Area Survey 2 epoch proper motion catalogue. This object displays significant spectral peculiarity, with the largest yet seen deviations from T6 and T7 templates in the Y and K bands for this subtype. Its large, ∼ 1 arcsec/yr, proper motion suggests a large tangential velocity of Vtan ≈ 240− 340kms , if we assume its MJ lies within the typical range for T6.5 dwarfs. This makes it a candidate for membership of the Galactic halo population. However, other metal poor T dwarfs exhibit significant under luminosity both in specific bands and bolometrically. As a result, it is likely that its velocity is somewhat smaller, and we conclude it is a likely thick disc or halo member. This object represents the only T dwarf earlier than T8 to be classified as a subdwarf, and is a significant addition to the currently small number of known unambiguously substellar subdwarfs.

Discovery of an ultra-cool subdwarf: LSR1425+7102, first star with spectral type sdM8.0

We report the discovery of the coolest subdwarf reported to date. The star LSR1425+7102 was discovered in our survey for faint high proper motion stars in the northern sky. Follow-up spectroscopy revealed the star to be a very red object with the characteristic signature of M subdwarfs: strong CaH bands but relatively weaker TiO bands. The CaH molecular band at ≈ λ6900Å is particularly strong. ...

LSR 1610 - 0040 : the first early - type L subdwarf

We report the discovery of LSR1610-0040, a previously unreported r = 17.5 star with a very high proper motion μ = 1.46 yr. This very cool star (b−i=6.3) is found to have a peculiar spectrum that does not fit into the standard sequence of late-M dwarfs and L dwarfs. Rather, the spectrum is more typical of an ultra-cool subdwarf, with weak bands of TiO and no detectable VO. But because LSR1610-00...

Discovery of a Second L Subdwarf in the Two Micron All Sky Survey

I report the discovery of the second L subdwarf identified in the Two Micron All Sky Survey, 2MASS J16262034+3925190. This high proper motion object (μ = 1. 27±0. 03 yr) exhibits near-infrared spectral features indicative of a subsolar metallicity L dwarf, including strong metal hydride and H2O absorption bands, pressure-broadened alkali lines, and blue near-infrared colors caused by enhanced c...

This is an author produced version of The OmegaWhite Survey for Short-period Variable Stars. V. Discovery of an Ultracompact Hot Subdwarf Binary with a Compact Companion in a 44-minute Orbit

We report the discovery of the ultracompact hot subdwarf (sdOB) binary OW J074106.0–294811.0 with an orbital period of P 44.66279 1.16 10 orb 4 =  ́ minutes, making it the most compact hot subdwarf binary known. Spectroscopic observations using the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes revealed a He-sdOB primary with an intermediate helium abundance, Teff = 39 400 500  K and g log = 5.74±0.09. Hi...

Are All Hot Subdwarf Stars in Close Binaries?

We discuss whether the hypothesis that “all (or most) subdwarfs are in close binaries” is supported by the frequently reported observations of photometrically or spectroscopically composite character of many hot subdwarf stars. By way of a possible counter-argument, we focus on resolved companions (optical pairs) of hot subdwarf stars. On a statistical basis, many of these are physically associ...
